What Dramas Am I Watching This Week

Here's what I'm watching this week! Of course the list is split by country and episodes I've seen so far are written below! There will be spoilers from now on so if you aren't caught to the episode number I list, you might want to go watch that episode and then come back! If you're interested in previous lists, click here and if you want to see a list of my favorite asian OTPs and ships, click here!

KDRAMA

FINISHED Are You Human Too? (36/36): The drama tells of an android called Nam Shin III who must pretend to be the son of a rich family when the real Nam Shin falls into a coma. Nam Shin's mother, Oh Ro Ra is a genius on brain technology and artificial intelligence (AI) so when her son, the real Nam Shin, is taken away from her at a young age, in her grief she creates an android that looks exactly like her son and has it grow up in the place of Nam Shin. But when Nam Shin, who is a third generation heir to PK group, gets in an accident and is comatose, the android Nam Shin III must learn how to take his place.

So this show is finally over and seriously it's about time. I hardcore fast fowarded through the last 6 episodes and I'm sorry cause honestly if I'm being objective, this show wasn't all that terrible but personally from the very start I've said I'm not comfortable with a human falling in love with a robot so I went into this feeling sketch from the start. Though I was able to get past that icky feeling after a while, it came back to me once Shin woke up and everyone found out Nam Shin III was a robot and the idea of So Bong being in love with the robot freaked me out all over again. It also didn't really help that the show decided instead of taking an interesting route with Shin to make him basically a villain until the final episode where he was redeemed in a bit of a silly way. I did like that Young Joon took over the company and that Shin got to live his life with all the freedom he wanted and I guess it was sweet that Shin used his money to rebuild Nam Shin III for So Bong so they can go and live their lives together. Overall I think I liked what this show could have been more than what it was if I'm being honest. I know we were promised a look at what makes a person human but instead we just got a full 36 episodes of everyone being an asshole and Nam Shin III being the only good part. I'd give this show a 7 / 10 and that might be generous.
My ID Is Gangnam Beauty (4/16): Adapted from a popular webtoon, this drama tells of Kang Mi Rae, a girl once bullied for her looks. As a result, she became insecure, cautious around people and withdrawn. However, Mi Rae decides she wants a fresh start away from bullying and gets plastic surgery to transform her face. When she begins university, she meets Do Kyung Suk from their middle school days, who sees people for what they are on the inside and not the outside; he then becomes attracted to Kang Mi Rae.As Mi Rae begins to get teased once more and labeled "Gangnam Beauty", the cold, aloof but kind inside Kyung Suk becomes the one person that stands up for her and in the process, Mi Rae begins to recover her lost confidence and discovers that true beauty is not on the outside.

So I'm officially obsessed with this show and mostly just cause I adore Kyung Suk turning into a puppy whenever Mi Rae is around. I've always said that one of my favorite types of male characters are the ones who basically turn into putty whenever the female leads are around especially when the male leads are supposed to be all cold. I mean who doesn't want a man who literally looks at you with heart eyes? I had a huge grin on my face when Mi Rae asked him out for drinks and his face was so stunned and so hopeful and it's going to be a little sad when he finds out that she just asked him out to talk about him mom! I loved that the two have gotten to the friend stage of their relationship already and she's no longer seeing him as this terrible being from her past. I'm also loving all the side characters more this especially the second lead who's seriously so hot and if Kyung Suk wasn't so precious I might be having second lead syndrome! I also hope that the girls who Mi Rae became friends with won't turn on her out of jealously (cause all the guys talk about her being so hot) since I want Mi Rae to have more girl friends! I'm not a huge fan of Kyung Suk's mom that we met this week cause she's already basically using Mi Rae to get closer to her son like bitch talk to him yourself and don't drag a rando girl you just met into your family problems! Also Soo Ah is definitely such a fake bitch and literally one of the worst kind of people cause it's one thing to be a bitch but when you pretend to be nice, it drives me crazy and the fact that Mi Rae can't see through her is annoying as well. I wonder if we'll get some backstory on Soo Ah cause hardcore there has to be a reason why she's so adamant on being the center of attention all the time and why she has the whole school wrapped around her finger yet still wants to tear Mi Rae down. I bet you anything that she has the same backstory as Mi Rae except maybe she grew to be pretty and that's why she's the way she is.
Thirty But Seventeen/Still Seventeen (12/32): Woo Seo Ri, a violin prodigy at 17 who was about to study in Germany, got into a bus accident and fell into a coma waking up 13 years later. Mentally she is still only 17, while physically she is now 30. Gong Woo Jin is a 30 year old single man who works as a set designer. Due to a trauma he experienced 13 years before, he does not want to have a relationship with others. This series is about a man and a woman whose lives have been mangled due to a grisly accident. Together, they use all their might to try and open the door to happiness that they once thought had been closed to them.

Is anyone else obsessed with this show? No? Just me? Alright, that's fine. I'll just live in my bubble over here and adore this show. I'm loving how the relationship between our main leads is progressing and though I had wished that Woo Jin would have picked up who she was earlier, after his reaction to the idea that she's similar, I want to go back!!! I was so enjoying how comfortable he got around her and how she's slowly falling for him and I do hope that once he gets past the hurdle of trauma, we'll be able to return to that. I am hoping that by wiping away her tears at the end of this week that it means that he's accepted her presence and will not be running anymore. He's such a little cinnamon roll that thinks he's all tough and shit but worries so much for Seo Ri and is bossed around by some high school kids and I adore that. When he smiles, the world seems to light up. I love that Seo Ri is joining Woo Jin's company cause I'm interested to see where that will go and how much she'll enjoy it cause that would be a great place to get a real job since the boss is a friend of Woo Jin's so I have a feeling that she wouldn't mind that Seo Ri wasn't a college graduate or anything. It is really sad that she missed out on the wonderful life she would have had as a violinist so it would be sweet if she was able to reach that dream again but I have a feeling that it might be too late for that. I also am not looking forward to when the doctor friend finds her and she leaves with him cause I am living for the house antics and I don't really want them to stop!
Time (10/32): This is the story of two polar opposite people that come together in tragedy. One remains stuck in time, whilst the other only has a limited amount of time left to live. Seol Ji Hyun is a woman who, although living a hard life, remains positive, upbeat and social. Cheon Soo Ho is the CEO of a restaurant and the son of a wealthy family with a terrible temper and no regard for other people. They both meet briefly under negative impressions of each other. However, their lives become entangled once more when Ji Hyun's sister dies unexpectedly in Soo Ho's residence. From there, Ji Hyun's time stops and she becomes a cold, miserable person who finds nothing to live for. But Soo Hoo, who carries heavy guilt and is drawn to her, promises to himself to use the 6 months he has left to live to help her, whose life was destroyed because of him. In the process, Soo Ho falls in love with Ji Hyun, but how far can love develop when you only have a limited time left to live?

I am really glad with what we got this week cause I loved that Soo Ho told his truth without prompting from anyone else which makes it the most impactful. Sometimes I wish that these shows wouldn't go the most predictable route and take a chance for once and that's what we're getting here which I give this show props for. Rather than waiting until these two fall in love and then someone (probs her asshole ex) tells her that Soo Ho killed her sister and she'll confront him and cause he feels guilty he'll say it's true and then she'll be mega pissed at him and second-guess all of their previous interactions, Soo Ho stepped up first. In a way I do understand why the truth is usually held off until after the love is formed cause if it happens before, the love interest might not want anything to do with the liar but at the same time the betrayal would be less intense if the truth came out sooner. I like that the truth is coming out not because of anyone but Soo Ho himself cause despite how much he tries to hide it, he is a good person and he really had no part in what happened to Ji Hyun's sister so it breaks my heart that everyone keeps telling him he killed the girl. The final interview was so emotional and I was tearing up though my favorite moment would still have to be on the roof when Soo Ho was trying to talk Ji Hyun off the ledge. I still do think the CCTV footage is out there somewhere cause I have the feels that it didn't get destroyed in the car accident cause that would be too easy for the bad guys especially since the escort guy is still alive. As more and more time passes, Ji Hyun's lawyer ex becomes more and more of a complete asshole. I still don't understand why he despises Soo Ho so much cause it isn't as though Soo Ho is the worst of the rich bunch and the ex has no problem murdering people to solve problems but he run around acting as though he's exhausted by all these rich people. Soo Ho is practically as much of a victim as Ji Hyun and her family. It makes me so angry whenever Soo Ho's brother talks about wanting to ruin Soo Ho cause we know that he only has 6 months to live and I want him to live so badly not just cause I adore him but cause I really don't want the assholes to live and get what they want!
Witch's Love (6/12): In plain sight in bustling Seoul, three generations of witches have been living below the radar of everyone around them. Kang Cho Hong operates a restaurant with her fellow witches, Maeng Ye Soon and Jo Aeng Doo. They try to keep a low profile, but Cho Hong’s youthful good looks attract the attention of a neighborhood guy, Hwang Jae Wook, who is constantly trying to get close to her. Cho Hong and her fellow witches’ quiet lives become complicated when their building landlord, Ma Sung Tae, shows up one day. Sung Tae wants to face a traumatic incident that happened to him in that building when he was a little boy. With Sung Tae nosing around their business on a regular basis, can Cho Hong keep her true identity a secret from him?

This is definitely a strange show but I think I like it anyway though that might just be because somehow the main couple has grabbed me. It's crazy cause Sung Tae is a bit insane and possibly in love with our girl already but super fighting it cause he doesn't want to be interested in her. I love that she can read him so easily and didn't take any of nonsense after he caught her with Jae Wook and told him that he was just beating around the bush when he tried to lecture her cause he was jealous and that was that. Jae Wook is adorable too in his own right and I love that he's so into witches and that he finds everything Cho Hong does adorable. We also got a little more info about the magical witch world and I know I complained at first cause the show didn't set up rules for this world but it looks like we'll be getting them slowly over time. It seems that the reason witches aren't supposed to love is cause if/when their hearts are broken from a betrayal then they lose their magic and within a month they go insane but if they find their fated man, they will get their magic back. I'm pretty sure after this week that Jae Wook is actually Cho Hong's fated man but because she thinks Sung Tae is the one, they'll end up falling in love and she'll give up her powers for him. I think she can stop the aging process with a kiss but to get her powers back she'll have to do something with Jae Wook's heart and since I doubt that Sung Tae will betray her (he's the male lead right?), it's okay for them to fall for each other. Speaking of kisses, Cho Hong and Sung Tae had an amazing one and at first I wasn't sure if they had enough chemistry but from the moment he picked her up bridal style and she blew in his ear to the moment they kissed, I was feeling it!!!
Your House Helper (24/32): The daily life of an average working woman involves: a packed subway during the rush hours, a miserable old boss, juniors clawing their way up, mounting credit card debt, and a rusty and tired body... And above all, the worst is the endless housekeeping work that awaits her at home. But what if a handsome guy appears and takes care of all the housekeeping work for her? And not only that, what if he solves the problems in her complicated and confused life? In this drama, a male house helper does housekeeping works in different women's houses and tries to solve their issues.

I was cheering so hard for Da Yeong this week cause every week it seems like she gets stronger and stronger and I was living for her dragging that asshole. It was a surprise that the guy wasn't the worst and after some posturing not only apologized to her but to her company allowing Ms An to come back. I wasn't exactly thrilled that she had to explain her birth control pills to the asshole cause the point wasn't that she was sleeping around but the fact that he tried to get her drunk as shit and refused to stop when she said so. I don't know what part of no he didn't understand but I'm glad the problem was resolved especially since Ms An can come back to work and doesn't have to hide her son anymore. I also loved Ji Woon punching him cause he kept talking shit about Da Yeong. I wonder how much longer we'll have to wait until he realizes he likes her too though every week we seem to be getting closer and closer. I also really enjoyed that So Mi is going to try to get past her fear of men with Ga Nam which seems to me the perfect way to fall for him (cause I ship it.) We also learned a little more about what happened with her brother who turned out to be her stepbrother which makes it slightly less creepy. So Mi's so quiet that it's hard to tell how she felt about the whole thing cause at first she seemed to be super against the whole thing but after that scene where she got angry that her stepbrother was talking about sleeping with her for fun, I wondered if she was into him too and was upset that he didn't actually like her. Either way, he's an ass and I think based on where this show is going that So Mi will eventually yell at him about what he did. The stuff with Hye Joon was really sad cause she's so in love with her gay friend and it's hard cause you can't control your feelings though now that they talked about her feelings for him, she can move on cause unless he's bi, there's no chance of a happy ending there.

CDRAMA

Legend of Fu Yao (64/66): Meng Fu Yao, a woman born from a divine lotus petal. She journeys through the five continents towards the heavens in search of a secret order and to reveal a conspiracy originating from the heavens. In the process, she falls in love with the crown prince Zhangsun Wuji.

Fu Yao has officially been revealed to be the true heir of Xuanji like we all expected and kind of knew. It was heartbreaking when she finally reunited with her father though it's totally lame that he just skipped out like oh I spent 20 years of my life looking for you but now that I know you're alive I don't need to stay by your side. I understand that he feels guilty or whatever but you would think he would want to catch up or I don't know get to know his daughter! Anyway I loved the coronation and how the Phoenix actually came out of the scepter to prove Fu Yao's birth but it leads me to wonder how Feng Xuan faked it. Maybe she took some of her sister's blood and smeared it on the scepter? We also lifted two more tiers of the spell and Fu Yao finally after so many episodes knows the truth about herself and who she is and now I'm assuming will want Wu Ji to kill her to stop the world from getting destroyed. We also got a fun twist in discovering just how damn evil the emperor is! He waited 20 years to get his revenge and seriously wants to murder everyone from his brother to his wife to his heir apparent to Fu Yao just because his daddy didn't love him? People are the worst honestly. It's interesting though that despite everything he did love Wu Ji in his own way and claims that everything he did was in the best interest of Wu Ji.
DROPPED Legend of Yun Xi (35/48): The story follows a lady doctor (Han Yun Xi) who marries into the royal family and gets caught in the political machinations in the palace whilst she falls into a romance with her husband. The story takes place during a chaotic time when the land has split into three kingdoms - Tian Ning, Western Zhou and Northern Li. The Emperor of Tian Ning is cunning and distrustful, and fears his own subordinate Long Feiye. To dampen his spirits, the King arranges for Long Feiye to be married to an "ugly" woman named Han Yun Xi. Han Yun Xi is a kind and talented woman who comes from a medical family and is adept with poisons. She is also forced into obeying the decree of the king and becomes a royal consort in name only. However, circumstances allow her to show off her skills time and again, winning the admiration of Long Feiye. At the same time, she also forms a friendship with Gu Qishao (Master of Yao Gui Valley).

So I really don't want to drop this show cause I was pretty into it for as long as I have been watching but it's reached the weird stage where the subs are no longer making any sense and though I tried to watch 4 episodes this week by muddling through the nonsense, I feel as though I'm missing a lot of plot cause I don't particularly understand what is happening. I guess technically I'm actually hitting pause on this show rather than dropping it per say cause if the subs get fixed at all in the future, I'll jump back in!
DROPPED Love Is In The Air (10/24): Two years have passed since white collar worker Jiang Yi Yi and her first love Chu Tian Qi broke up. Even though Yi Yi pretends to not be affected anymore, she still can’t forget him. Then she meets the trainee guardian Fang Mu Ye from the Guardian Tribe, with whom she ends up living together. Mu Ye’s supernatural powers add a lot of fun to Yi Yi’s life, making her gradually forget Tian Qi and focus on her dream of becoming an inventor again. The two become a bickering couple, however, a crazy scientist, who’s looking for a study object, appears.

When I started this show I was into it cause I thought the premise and the characters and the romance were fun but now I'm a little bit over this show and when I went to start the 11th episode, I just couldn't find myself caring and so instead of forcing myself to keep watching, I'm going to stop. Not only was this one of those shows that doesn't get subbed for weeks on end, I'm just not a fan of how the story is going. The guardian angel aspect of the show has been an afterthought for so long which I could have been cool with if not for the show basically hitting pause on the romance. I loved watching Tian Qi and Mu Ye get closer but after her ex came back, she's turned into this moron who runs back to the ex despite knowing all the pain he put her through. There's barely any cute moments between the couple and I just am not about it. Sorry everyone!
Meteor Garden (29/48): An ordinary girl is admitted to the most prestigious school in the country where she encounters F4, an exclusive group comprised of the four wealthiest and handsomest boys in the school - Dao Ming Si, Hua Ze Lei, Xi Men and Mei Zuo.

The episodes this week started out really sweet and then quickly devolved into really sad cause seriously these two cannot be happy for more than a few minutes every few episodes and it's driving me crazy cause angst is fun and all sometimes but in order for me to enjoy the angst, we need some happy moments! The highlight of this week was when Shan Cai kissed Si for the first time on her own. I think ties on guys are super sexy just cause of the idea that you can pull them to you when you want to kiss and I love when girls do that on shows so I was living. I loved that Si took her to a super girly shop that she wanted to visit just cause she was a little sad but I do wish that instead of Si saying over and over that he can protect her that he would actually take some action! It's driving me crazy that he is basically just letting his mom trample over her cause of course Shan Cai would cut and run in that case! It was sad seeing how he basically shut down when she left him but in my evil heart I was kinda all for him being a complete asshole for episodes cause it felt true to character. I do wish that we could have seen Shan Cai a bit more sad but it was in character for her to focus all her attention on something else when she's sad while Si shuts down. There was so much Caina and Mei Zuo stuff in the meantime and though I loved how exasperated Lei and Xi Men were about Mei Zuo's love, I didn't actually care that much about the triangle. The only thing that I cared about was how sad Mei Zuo was when he realized that no matter what he does Caina was into Terence and that he will need to step aside cause that's a real man guys.
Sweet Combat (25/38): As the eldest daughter of the Fang Conglomerate, Fang Yu was raised to become the sole successor of the company, yet she goes against her family's objections to pursue boxing and won the championship title at the young age of 18. On the other hand, Ming Tian comes from a poor family. He once stopped schooling for three years in order to work and he decided to apply for a sports scholarship despite not having any background whatsoever. Fang Yu was one of the first to see his talents and their relationship grows over time.

I say it every week but man do I love this show!! I enjoy every single moment of every single episode and I'm calling it right now that this will be one of my fav shows of the year! Ugh the best moment this week was when Fang Yu and Ming Tian finally stopped beating around the bushes and it's all thanks to Sun Hao who blurted out to Ming Tian that Fang Yu likes him. It gave him enough confidence to go to her and I was thrilled that they not only told each that they liked each other but they also cleared up some previous misunderstandings like Ming Tian being jealous of Fang Yu making noodles with Sun Hao and Fang Yu being jealous that he was kissed by Xiao Mi. I loved the progression from a hug to a cheek kiss to an actual kiss! These two have so much chemistry that I'm living!!! I also loved that he straight out told Xiao Mi that he's not interested and though that hasn't seemed to stop her, at least he was straight with her and she can't say that she didn't know. There were a lot of comedic moments this week too which I enjoyed and I love Fang Zhao to pieces cause he's the sweetest little brother! I'm not in love with the grandpa hating Ming Tian thing cause it's exhausting to watch and I'm so looking forward to the part where he forces Ming Tian to be fired from all his jobs cause what else do rich people have to do with their lives but make poor people feel worse about themselves? I'm also in love with Guan Yan and wasn't his 100 reasons why I like you texts the cutest things ever?? Ugh that's how you woo a girl! Of course it seems like the whole thing that Ya Nan's dad set up with saying that he'll teach Guan Yan if he hooks up with his daughter came back to bite Ya Nan in the butt. I was honestly surprised that Ya Nan wasn't more angry at her dad and honestly I wanted a little more angst between these two which I hope we'll see more of in the future.

JDRAMA

FINISHED Switched (6/6): The series centers on Ayumi Kohinata, a first-year high school student who has a cute and shy personality. She's excited that she just started dating her first boyfriend, but on the day of their first date, she gets a mysterious call from her classmate Zenko Umine. Zenko says she's going to die, and Ayumi witnesses Zenko jumping from a building. The next thing she knows, Ayumi wakes up in a hospital, but in Zenko's body.

This was a really interesting show for me to check out cause I was really into the premise of the show and I really enjoyed watching it cause of how different it was as we all know jdramas are! I do kind of wish that this show was longer cause it felt like things progressed a bit fast but at the same time I liked that Kaga found out about the switch almost immediately cause out of body hijinks aren't exactly my favorite! I loved watching Kaga and Ayumi work together to figure out what was going and how to fix it. The ending was great too cause it taught Zenko that though looks are important, what's more important is what's on the inside and it was sweet that the foursome became really good friends at the end. The only thing I wasn't down with was that Ayumi chose Shiro over Kaga cause like though he was redeemed for me in the end and he was just playing Zenko to help Ayumi, it felt like Kaga was there more for Ayumi and honestly I still have a feeling that part of Shiro was always jealous of Kaga and that's why he started being into Ayumi. She seemed to care for Kaga more throughout the show and it was a little sad that she didn't pick him especially when watching Kaga break down when he realized that he needed to step aside to let Ayumi be happy. Ugh why. Other than that, I did really enjoy this show and I'd give it a 8.5 / 10!

xoxo Allie
