What Shows Am I Watching This Week?

Hello everyone and welcome back! Let's dive right in shall we?

My Hero Academia Season 1 - 4

I've always meant to check this anime cause if there ever was an anime built just for me it would have been this one! I mean seriously you all know how much I absolutely adore practically every superhero show out there and I'm a huge lover of anime but I just never got around to binging this show until now. I was actually kinda surprised with how much I liked Deku as a character. In most shounen anime, the male leads are always these complete morons who are naive to the world and preach about family and love and friendship and win the day (looking at your Naruto and Natsu!) so to my surprise though Deku had shades of the typical shounen protagonist, I enjoyed that he was intelligent and more grounded as well. I enjoyed watching him adjust to his powers over these four seasons and I look forward to seeing him grow even more! Having said that my best boi is still Shōto and it breaks my heart that he doesn't get as much screen time as Bakugō who I'm not the hugest fan of tbh cause he's just too much with all his yelling and screaming but I also found myself growing a soft spot for Kirishima after this most recent season. I do personally feel like each new season of this show has been better than the last so while season 1 was fun enough to get me sucked into the world, in hindsight it was the least interesting one. I really enjoyed the whole hero license arc but the saving Eri arc was definitely my favorite so far though the filler in the second half of season 4 really dragged the whole season down.

Season 5 of My Hero Academia I believe is coming out in the Spring 2021 season and I will definitely be back!

Durarara!! Season 1 & 2

Honestly guys I started this anime by mistake! I had been looking for a show with a similar vibe to Akadama Drive but I misunderstood the name of the anime that was given to me so I jumped into this anime thinking it was the right one only to later find out I was mistaken. Having said that I am glad I made this mistake cause I did end up having a blast with this show which is interesting cause when this show first started I was hella bored and confused. The thing you need to realize going into this show is that every character in this show is grey so you need to toss out what you think is right or wrong going in. You also need to know that this show is actually supernatural and it ended up reminding me a lot of Ikebukuro West Gate Park except with magic involved. In my personal opinion season 1 was better than season 2 on the whole but most of that could be traced back to me not liking where the show took Mikado in the second season though if I'm being honest I never really cared about him or his arc in the first place. Mikado tried so hard to walk the line between good and bad and even when he took the plunge into the bad, he thought he was doing good and I was just not about it. Like Izaya I was of the mind that the two were two sides of the same coin only where Izaya revelled in the chaos, Mikado just acted like a whiny baby the whole time. Celty was obviously my favorite character in this show and of course I enjoyed her romance with Shinra though Shizuo was fun to follow too. I also really adored the way this show told it's stories in parallel. We would follow one character through a series of events only to turn back the clock in the next episode and see the same situation from someone else's POV and I absolutely adored it and thought it was super unique!

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 Episodes 1 - 13

So I finally caught up with Jujutsu Kaisen this week. I had originally checked out the first episode when it aired in the Fall 2020 season but then I stopped cause it was so clearly a shounen and I tend to prefer to binge shounens rather than watch them weekly. In the end I ended up breaking and catching up cause I just kept hearing hype over it and it left me feeling a bit of FOMO. The funny thing is that usually I watch shounens for the ensemble cast since like I said in the My Hero thought section above, I tend to find shounen protags irritating as all hell but in this show I find that Itadori is fascinating while the other Jujutsu Tech students are boring as hell. Like given the fact that this is a shounen I'm sure that as time goes on I'll end up liking the others too but for now it's Itadori and Gojou that I'm watching this show for not to mention the world and the cursed spirits! I actually ended up liking the bait and switch in the middle of this chunk of episodes in which I thought we'd be going to a tournament school arc only for the show to be like nah we're saving that for later and diving into the horror that is this world instead. I didn't expect for our heroes to defeat Mahito already since we're barely starting and he does remind me a lot of Tomura from My Hero in terms of aesthetics but I liked that this whole arc was meant for Itadori to face the reality of this world and throw away what little naivety he had before this.
