Riverdale Season 3 Episode 9 Review

What a fun episode to return to! Let's dive right in.

We come back a few weeks after the midseason finale where the quarantine has somehow been lifted and I'm oddly disappointed in that cause I thought it would be fun to see FP and Jughead try to sneak in or try to figure out what's happening with Hiram and why he wanted the quarantine in the first place cause if it wasn't permanent, why bother? He's apparently gone full mob boss by not only making Fizzle Rocks and dealing them but by running the Gargoyle Gang who goes around attacking businesses and people unless they cough up protection money. I kind of find it hilarious that the start of the season made you wonder what the hell was going on with the Gargoyle King but now he's just there to scare others and aren't we almost certain that it's Hiram? I have a feeling that every time someone saw him all decked out that it was probably cause the person seeing him was high or drugged or something. I still feel like the seizures were insane and that Hiram is like using incense or something to secretly drug everyone to scare them.

Veronica spent the episode trying to figure out how to get around Hiram. Her speakeasy is doing amazing cause now that Riverdale is basically run by Hiram and Riverdale High has all these rules and stuff of course all the kids come to her to party and relax. She did manage to trick Hiram into 10% rather than the 50% cut he wanted but as it turned out he knew she was playing him too so it was kinda nothing. I'm actually surprised that not only did she not turn to the Serpents before for protection but that one came up with the idea in the weeks leading up to now. I also really love the new Veronica and Reggie relationship cause I do really think they have so much more chemistry than Archie and Veronica did and that might be because Reggie has a better I'm into you acting face or because the actors are dating in real life. I've been lowkey shipping them all season so I'm super down and I kind of hope that they keep going for a bit because we all know they're not endgame no matter how fun they are. Since Archie is the main character of this show that he needs either Betty or Veronica to be with him and people are so in love with Betty and Jughead that I doubt that it would be Betty to get with him so Veronica has to bite the bullet.

Speaking of Jughead, he spent a lot of the episode struggling to be Serpent King cause of the decisions he had to make and fighting Cheryl who was of the mind that the Serpents should be able to do whatever they want aka sell drugs and rob people. It was really weird cause it's not like Cheryl and in extension Toni were doing it for the Serpents cause the money was just being used by Cheryl so I don't really know where she was getting off. She also claimed that Jughead was an asshole for leaving for a month but didn't she leave Riverdale for 3 months over the summer earlier anyway? Honestly Cheryl is kinda the worst and I've always pretty much thought that. On one hand I do feel sorry for her and what she's been through but on the other hand that doesn't really excuse all the things she's done and I've always thought it was super weird that she joined the Serpents in the first place. It was lame as hell that she had no initiation or Serpent tattoo and even got a red jacket just cause so I'm a little glad she's not part of them anymore. Either way I was really worried that the Serpents might turn on Jughead again and that he would have to fight for power with Cheryl so I was surprised that he kicked her and Toni out of the gang. I'm also glad that even though Fangs was kicked out that he's still loyal to Jughead and the Serpents and will be going undercover with the Gargoyle Gang cause I was worried he might hate Jughead and join them on his own terms. I still feel like this won't be the end of this power struggle and that at the least Cheryl or Toni will be back to fight another day.

Archie spent the episode hallucinating or something and it was super weird. I didn't really like this part and I zoned out for a bunch of it but basically he looked back on his "lost innocence" and how he was so stubborn. I still think it's kinda funny that he just doesn't go back to Riverdale but stay broken up with Veronica cause I know Hiram put a bounty on his head but wouldn't he be safer if was with the Serpents or something? The episode ends with him looking dead on that bed but there's no way he's not going to be fine so that was a bit silly.

Back in Riverdale, Betty and Attorney McCoy tried to come up with a case against Hiram but they couldn't do anything unless the Sisters of Quiet Mercy turned on Hiram and testified that he was in fact making drugs and testing them on children but like I expected, there was nothing to this angle. Eventually Hiram got them out of prison by posting bail and it seems like they all committed suicide at the end. I wonder what Hiram has on them that they're so loyal to him and I want to know more about this weird reveal that they were excommunicated from the church cause they were abusing children. How on Earth did the social worker know about this but no one else? How were parents sending kids here if they knew?

I'm also still waiting on more information on the Farm which I still think is a cult of some sort. I do still think they're connected to the overall plot of this season but I'm not really sure how. They just keep popping in and out and sucking up new members and honestly these kids from the Sisters seem like perfect recruits cause they're pretty much constantly looking for someone to follow whether it be the Sisters or Betty or the Farm now.

The promo for next week is a little strange cause it didn't show us anything really new. The show wants us to think that Archie might be dead hence all of the other members of the Core 4 being sad but if Archie was really dead, Fred would be more torn up. I do wonder if Hiram will be taken down next week and whether Hermione is actually working against him. Last season we were given a hint that maybe Hermione is a boss herself and I would think it's fun if she ended up taking over Hiram's empire but with a softer touch.

And that's all for now! I'll see you all Friday for my weekly drama reviews and then Sunday for my Supergirl review!

xoxo Allie
