The Flash Season 5 Episode 1 Review

We're finally back and who's pumped for this new season? If you're joining me for the first time on my Arrowverse reviews, welcome! I post Flash and Arrow reviews every week while also doing the premieres and finales of Legends of Tomorrow and this year Supergirl (cause I haven't been a huge fan of the show last season and I don't want to review something negatively each week.) If you're curious click here to see more. The Flash hasn't always been my favorite but mostly that's because I'm a Wally West girl and Barry Allen is just super annoying in this version. Despite that I was super excited for this season cause I loved what we saw of Nora Allen in the finale and I'm hoping she's going to be the Impulse of this show! So let's dive right in! Since this is a review, there will obviously be spoilers below!

Overall I really enjoyed tonight's episode! Nora was adorably precious and as I suspected, I loved her. It was interesting to see Jessica Parker Kennedy play the daughter of Barry and Iris when she's either older or about the same age as them. I've seen her in The Secret Circle and Black Sails and Nora is so different from anything she's played before and she was killing it! I loved that unlike what all of us were predicting before, she didn't come back and screw up the timeline (at least not yet) but only pretended to be stuck so she could spend more time with Barry which I think was adorable. She does seem to have a similar personality to Bart Allen as I was hoping and I love that she uses different words cause the cool words are always changing so it would make sense though I was hoping she would use crash and mode even though those are from further in the future than she came from cause it would have been a fun Easter Egg.

I'm curious about what's going on between Iris and Nora cause from last season it felt as though Nora really wasn't a fan of her mom and that seemed to carry through to this episode. Iris really wanted to get to know Nora but Nora was dodgy every time she tried. She did hint that they didn't hang out much together and when Barry asked, she was vague about it too. I could see that maybe after Barry disappeared Iris shut down and that's why Nora and her have a bad relationship. I do hope we talk about this at some point this season and I'm sure they'll talk it out. I also did love the scene where Barry taught Nora how to phase while flashing back to when Eobard taught Barry. I'm curious about how long Nora will stick around and if she'll leave before the finale.

Ralph spent most of the episode as comedic fodder which was a strange place cause it felt like the show was trying to recap the past with him like so new viewers had an idea of what was happening. I did like that he had a reason for being MIA the whole episode in that he was searching for Caitlin's dad. I loved that he had no idea about anything that happened since he "died" cause the show did pick up right after last season ended so there was no time to catch him up.

Caitlin and Cisco didn't do too much this week either but that's understandable cause this was an episode to get to know Nora. We did learn though that Caitlin's dad is still alive. If I had to guess, I'd say not only did Caitlin get her powers from her father (who would also be a meta) but he might have done something to make her powers dormant. I'm curious about this idea cause up until now in the Flash world metas came from the particle accelerator explosion rather than metagenes like the comics usually do but last season introduced the idea of metagenes in Caitlin's DNA so it would be interesting if other metas were also born with their powers. I'd be interested in hearing the explanation as to why her genes got activated without dark matter cause obviously humans with the metagenes absorbed the dark matter and gained powers and those without the metagenes weren't affected.

We also seem to be getting a bit of a soft upgrade this season with this lounge area that apparently Star Labs has always had but no one's known about except for Joe. Caitlin is also going into the field weirdly enough and Joe was barely in the episode. My baby Wally was around tonight as well but I know Keiynan Lonsdale left the Arrowverse (to pursue music) so I'm curious about whether he pops up in Legends and gets a reason to leave (cause at the end of this episode he made it sound like he'd go back to the Legends rather than off into the world again) or maybe we'll even get a one-off line from like Nate saying where Wally went.

The promo for next week looks like more fun Nora and Barry bonding time as well as a little jealous Iris which makes sense cause Nora doesn't seem to want to spend any time with her. I wonder if we'll already get the explanation next week about why Nora and Iris aren't close.

I'll see you all tomorrow for my Riverdale review!

xoxo Allie
